HBC&U Legacies is a team of experienced educators from Detroit, Michigan. Our team comprises three High School Counselors, one Assistant Principal, and a retired ROTC Instructor who served 33 years in the Army National Guard. We specialize in providing HBCU-specific exploration, application, and financing resources to ensure that the college-going culture is HBCU-inclusive and that all students are educated about all post-secondary options.

"Our message is not that PWIs don't provide a quality education for our students, our message is that HBCUs provide a quality education too!"

Tracey Penick, M.Ed, LLPC

“It was my friends and family. The Cosby Show & A Different World gave me more interest. I am so proud that I choose an HBCU and I encourage my students and my own children to broaden their options by considering HBCUS as well. I'm a PROUD TSU Grad!"

Allan Washington, MEDL
Assistant Principal
"Attending Kentucky State University provided me with the opportunity to grow up and decide what path I was going to take. I wasn't the model student. I landed on academic probation because of my poor choices but that environment helped me find my way."

LTC Leonard Rusher, MBA
Finance & Funding Consultant
“My parents attended Barber-Scotia College and Savannah State. Back then if you were black you didn’t have many options. If you wanted to be educated, you went to an HBCU.”

Sonya Griggs, MA, LLPC
School Counselor
"I was raised in Albany, GA and unlike my students who are raised in Detroit, I was immersed in HBCU Culture, From the time I was a little girl I was already familiar with all aspects of Albany State University. There was no other choice!"

Our Story
Our journey began out of necessity. As experienced educators we recognize that although there are over one hundred Historically Black Colleges & Universities most of our students are unfamiliar.
This is particularly challenging for us being from Detroit where the majority of our students are of color. We began this work because we were inspired by our students’ needs and our shared passion.
It was essential that we developed the tools necessary to change the narrative and ensure that the college-going culture in various educational spaces is HBCU-inclusive. It is of particular interest that students that look like us learn that there are places designed for us!
We provide students with exploration, application, and funding resources that are HBCU-specific. We also support educators by creating the context and providing tools so that their students receive information that is accurate and resourceful. If one can promote Harvard, UCLA, and NYU then, one can also promote Hampton, Xavier and Morgan State University with the same enthusiasm.
It is imperative that all students become aware of ALL post-secondary options. HBCUs MATTER!
Promoting the HBCU Option
Defining Legacies

Professional Development for Educators
Creating Context
We facilitate a workshop that provides educators with the information and tools necessary for creating an HBCU exclusive college going culture. Educators leave with a better understanding of how to promote the HBCU option in their respective spaces and resources to use when working with students.

HBCU Workshop for Students
Exploring the Option
We facilitate an interactive workshop for students that introduces them to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We also provide information about the history, culture, demographics, resources and next steps for applying.

College Fairs
Fueling the Mission
We set up tables at college fairs and events that promote college readiness to expose attendees to HBCUs and provide them with resources.
